Of all the ornate beach art I’ve seen in Stinson, this is my favourite.

This is at the start of our walk to town for lunch. The fog was just burning up. There is something universal about the simple joys of a beach vacation.

Snack shack, Stinson Beach, lunch time, fish sandwich and a side of fries, while kid flush with early summer holiday fever chattered. Here there’s not much more to do than slow yourself down and absorb the setting.

We stopped for supplies in Point Reyes, 30 minutes north of Stinson. It’s your archetypal small Northern California yet close to San Francisco town — the level of wealth belies its size. A lot of boutique cheese was on sale. We ate barbecue under a tree that we bought from a stand by the market.

We drove from Mendocino to Stinson Beach down the old Pacific Highway. It was remote, the most populous town we passed through was 500 maybe, and the view was of this calibre most of the way.

We stumbled upon a classic car show in Fort Bragg, 20 minutes drive from Mendocino. It was a town frequented by people who seemed as if they would enjoy a classic car show. Neil Young’s ‘Helpless’ played loudly in an art gallery and a chihuahua with a gimp leg walked sadly down the road.
